Our responsibility to the environment is integral to our company purpose, and central to this ambition is improving our pollutions performance.
At Anglian Water, protecting and enhancing the environment is central to our purpose. Our Pollution Incident Reduction Plan (PIRP) 2025 sets out how we’re tackling the root causes of pollution across our region, and how we’re evolving our approach in response to the challenges we face.
In AMP8, we’re entering a new phase of delivery. Backed by an additional £245 million investment, our plan aims to reduce total pollution incidents by 46% and serious pollutions by 72% by 2030.
Our Pollution Incident Reduction Plan 2025 at a glance:
Our strategy focuses on the three primary root causes of pollution: asset failure, blockages, and hydraulic overloading. These are being addressed through a combination of enhanced monitoring, smarter data, targeted maintenance, and community engagement.
What’s different in 2025 is how we deliver. We’re shifting from isolated fixes to system-wide solutions, using predictive analytics, geospatial modelling, and real-time telemetry to intervene earlier and more effectively. Our digital platform, The Hive, is giving us a clearer picture of risk across our network, helping us make faster, better-informed decisions.
We’re also scaling up our operational capacity, with over 215 new frontline roles to support pollution prevention, response, and investigation across the AMP (2025 - 2030). This includes new First Response teams, a Proactive Pumping Station Team, and expanded environmental technician support.
Alongside this, we’re continuing to work with customers and businesses to tackle unflushables in our system as a result of improper disposal. Our Just Bin It campaign and partnership with ECAS are helping to prevent unflushables and fats, oils and grease from entering the network, which are a key contributor to blockages.
We know that AMP8 brings a new regulatory landscape, with higher expectations and evolving metrics. While we recognise that performance improvements will take time, our plan is designed to deliver enduring change. It is supported by strong governance, independent assurance, and a clear glidepath for improvement.
Going forward we will publish an annual PIRP each April, in line with regulatory expectations and the Water (Special Measures) Act 2025.
Our long-term goal is zero untreated escapes by 2050. This plan is a critical step on that journey, and a clear commitment to environmental leadership.
