We’re proposing a 49km pipeline between Lolworth (Cambridge) and Rede. This forms the second stage of a wider 70km pipeline connecting Grafham Water Treatment Works to the Rede storage reservoir.
Plans in progress
This project is essential in strengthening water resilience for this community and the wider region we serve as well as supporting the people who live here. Explore the strategic pipelines and how we’re connecting them to a larger water grid as we protect the past, enhance the environment and leave a lasting legacy for the community
Proposed route
We've identified a preferred route and submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) scoping report to the relevant Local Planning Authorities, including; South Cambridgeshire District Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council and West Suffolk District Council.
The scoping report enables early feedback from statutory consultees and provides an opportunity to gather initial views on the proposed design.
We are also engaging directly with affected Parish Councils to understand local perspectives and incorporate their feedback.
Ongoing environmental surveys, ground investigations, and engineering assessments will inform the final route design.
We aim to submit a full planning application in Spring 2027 and will continue working closely with local communities throughout this process.
Engaging with communities
Community input is vital in shaping the final design of the project. During Spring 2026, we held a series of public information events where residents could speak directly with our experts in ecology, construction, and archaeology. Feedback from these sessions is currently being reviewed and will be included in our Statement of Community Involvement.
We remain committed to open dialogue and will continue to engage with residents as the project develops.
| What We're Doing | What it Means | When It's Happening |
|---|---|---|
Learning About Nature & Talking to You |
We’re surveying the land, wildlife, and plants and asking people what they think. |
Starting Spring 2025 |
Digging & Discovering History |
We’ll dig small trenches to learn what lies beneath the ground and uncover any artefacts or historic findings. |
Spring 2026 to Autumn 2026 |
Planning approval |
We will submit our plans to the local authority and ask for permission to build. |
Spring 2027 to Autumn 2027 |
Getting Ready to Build |
We’ll set up the site, protect nature, and prepare the land. |
Autumn 2027 |
Building the Pipe |
This is where we’ll be laying down the pipe, building pumping stations and storage tanks and connecting everything together. |
Spring 2028 |
Testing the Pipe |
We’ll clean and test the pipe to make sure it works safely. |
2030 |
Restoring the Land |
After building and testing the strategic pipe we’ll restore the land. |
After 2030 |
