We’re working together with Cambridge Water to deliver the Grafham to Cambridge Pipeline. It includes a new 28km pipeline that’ll run from Grafham. 21km will be delivered by our team and a further 7km section, known as the Madingley spur, will be delivered by Cambridge Water.
This is the first stage of a 70-kilometre pipeline that will be delivered in two phases, eventually supplying Cambridge, Suffolk and West Cambridgeshire. Discover more about the proposed second stage pipeline from Cambridge to Rede.
Update on project
We've identified a preferred route for the Pipeline. We've also submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Report to the Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) crossed by the route; Huntingdonshire District Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council. The EIA Scoping Report provides information about the proposed Scheme. Setting out the scope and methodology for the environmental assessments we plan to carry out to support the planning application, so that the LPAs can provide their Scoping Opinion.
Environmental surveys, ground investigation and engineering work are ongoing and will feed into the final route. We intend to submit a planning application in Autumn 2026 and throughout this period continue working with local communities to deliver a legacy along the route. We’ve also been running a series of public information events that have provided a wide range of information and our FAQ’s have been updated to include any recent feedback.
Our dedicated land agents have communicated with all landowners along the proposed route. Establishing whether or not the pipeline will run through or within the proximity their land.
We'll need access to some land to carry out surveys. Most work will involve pedestrian access, but some will require vehicles and intrusive ground investigation works. We'll work with landowners to reduce any impact and compensate for any losses.
We want to engage with affected parties and gather as much information as possible during the decision-making process. As such, we've asked landowners along the proposed route to complete and return a Land Entry Questionnaire. This will help us to establish the most encountered land issues.
Plans in progress
Scroll through the table below to see the timeframes we’re working to, for delivering this critical infrastructure.
| What We're Doing | What It Means | When It's Happening |
|---|---|---|
Learning About Nature & Talking to You |
We’re surveying the land, wildlife, and plants and asking people what they think. |
Starting Spring 2025 |
Digging & Discovering History |
We’ll dig small trenches to learn what lies beneath the ground and uncover any artefacts or historic findings |
Starting Autumn 2025 |
Planning approval |
We will submit our plans to the local authority and ask for permission to build. |
Summer 2026 |
Getting Ready to Build |
We’ll set up the site, protect nature, and prepare the land. |
Early 2027 |
Building the Pipe |
This is where we’ll be laying down the pipe, building pumping stations and storage tanks and connecting everything together. |
Late 2027 |
Testing the Pipe |
This is where we’ll be laying down the pipe, building pumping stations and storage tanks and connecting everything together. |
Late 2027 |
Testing the Pipe |
We’ll clean and test the pipe to make sure it works safely. |
2030 - 2031 |
Restoring the land |
After building and testing the strategic pipe we’ll restore the land. |
2031 -2032 |
