Anglian Water are continuing work in Haddenham and Wilburton replacing water mains to ensure that water supplies are safe and reliable for decades to come.

Earlier this month, the water company completed a £2.2 million upgrade in Haddenham which saw the replacement of 4km of water pipes. Starting from January, Anglian Water will be replacing 2.6km of pipes along Twenty Pence Road in Wilburton – a scheme totalling to £875,000.

The water company sends nearly a billion of litres of clean and healthy drinking water to its customers each and every day, and in order to achieve this, the infrastructure needs maintenance and investment to ensure the taps can keep running over the next few decades.

When pipes get old, they’re more likely to burst or leak – meaning customers could experience low pressures or interruptions to their water supplies. With the added pressure of a changing climate, more aging water mains are at risk of failing under extreme weather conditions.

The work in Wilburton is set to begin on 5th January 2026 and will be completed in the spring. A technique called directional drilling will be used which enables the water company to install new pipes underground without having to dig up large areas.

Ashton Carradine, Customer Experience Specialist for the project said:

“We operate in the driest region of the country, but the East of England is also one of the fastest growing areas, and we need to ensure there is enough water for everyone. “In order to complete the work in Wilburton, we’ll be closing Twenty Pence Lane for the entirety of our work. This is because the road is too narrow for our teams to work safely while still allowing traffic to go past the dig site. Access will be available for residents and a diversion route will be in place during this time.”

Every five years, the water company publishes their Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) which outlines how Anglian Water manages current and future water needs across the region. Without such proactive planning and investment, there will simply not be enough water to supply customers in the East of England.

Ashton added:

“As part of our Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP), we’re continuing to ensure that all our customers have a resilient supply of the highest quality drinking water. The project will ensure that we can keep taps running and toilets flushing for residents in Haddenham, Wilburton and the surrounding areas.”

In early 2026, the water company will be completing a final connection to their water tower off Wilburton Road. This work will be completed on site, so the road won’t be impacted but customers living nearby may hear work taking place during this time.

This work follows what may be the UK’s driest summer since records began. Anglian Water is continuing to encourage customers to be water-wise and keep supplies readily available for the region.
