The Sea Dragon is a nationally significant discovery and we’re determined to play our part in ensuring it is preserved, celebrated, and shared for generations to come.

Through our discussions with the Council we’d made significant progress towards an agreement to transfer the Sea Dragon at no cost to the Council for its acquisition and we remain ready to build on that progress should the opportunity arise.

Following the Council’s decision, Anglian Water will now continue to move forward with our original plans to celebrate and conserve the Rutland Sea Dragon. Working alongside the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, we will pursue the appropriate next steps, including an appeal to ensure the fossil can be conserved and ultimately displayed for public benefit, bringing this extraordinary discovery closer to the community where it was found.

As part of this commitment, we are progressing the refurbishment and reinterpretation of the Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre at Rutland Water Nature Reserve, due for completion this autumn. This redevelopment will create a high-quality, accessible visitor experience that tells the remarkable story of the Sea Dragon, from its Jurassic origins to its discovery in Rutland, and its place within the county’s unique landscape and heritage.

The enhanced centre will feature engaging digital interpretation, interactive educational displays, and dedicated learning spaces designed for visitors of all ages, including schools and community groups. It will act as the starting point for understanding the significance of the Sea Dragon and the wider natural history of Rutland, inspiring curiosity and connecting people with both the past and present environment.

This project reflects Anglian Water’s long-term commitment to doing the right thing for Rutland, protecting its natural assets, supporting education, and investing in facilities that benefit the local community and visitors alike.
